HELP - IMPORTING A SCREENPLAY FILE

The Import Script Data function will save you a lot of time entering scene information. It will upload and convert a text file of your screenplay, and automatically detect scene and character information and save it the database. Here's how to do it.
  • Use your screenwriting program to save your screenplay in a text format. (usually .txt). More about this below.
  • Do not try to import pdf or celtx files. Most screenwriting programs have an option to 'Save As' or 'Export' to a text file.
  • From the Screenplay page, load the screenplay project:

  • Click on the Import Script Data? link.

  • Select the screenplay file location from your hard drive:

  • Press the upload button and follow the remaining directions on screen.

Keep in mind, no script export/import system is perfect. You will still need to compare the uploaded data to your script to make sure it is accurate. However, even a 90% accuracy rate can save you HOURS of typing.

ACCEPTABLE FORMAT OF SCREENPLAY FILE

The screenplay file should look like one of these:

Notice that the text is exactly the same in both versions; only the white space is different.

The conversion process will first identify any sluglines as those beginning with "INT" or "EXT":

The conversion process will then identify, within each scene, potential characters as those being in upper case:

So that the following information will be loaded into the database for your script project:

1 U.S. DISTRICT COURTROOM -- PRESENT -- DAY
HANIF MOUSTAFA
JUDGE MESSNER
COURT REPORTER LUC
HANIF

2 EXT. UPSCALE NEIGHBORHOOD -- ESTABLISHING SHOTS -- FIVE YEARS AGO -- DAY
MILF MOMMIES
HISPANIC HOUSEKEEPERS
HISPANIC GARDENERS
THE MOUSTAFA FAMILY HOME

3 INT. MOUSTAFA FAMILY HOUSE -- DAY
etc.

You will then get to delete any unwanted scenes and/or characters. Notice in Scene 1 that HANIF MOUSTAFA shows up twice - once with her last name, once without. You should delete one of these.

Also notice in Scene 2 that THE MOUSTAFA FAMILY HOME shows up as a character, which you should delete.

Again, no system is perfect. This one is intended to do 90% of the data entry work for you.

HINTS

Use DR FORD instead of DR. FORD. Otherwise the system will think DR and FORD are two different people.

In sluglines, use hyphens ("-") ONLY to append a MORNING/DAY/EVENING/NIGHT tag: ex. INT. BATHROOM -- DAY. Do NOT use hyphens within the description itself. For example, PRE-TEEN'S BEDROOM should be PRE TEEN'S BEDROOM.
